In 1904, a significant find at Tønsberg, when the Oseberg ship was discovered, included five animal post heads, carved with an intricate Broa style patternwork. One was badly damaged; the remaining four were intact. Each of the five appears to have been done by different woodworkers, and the meaning of them is unclear, but often attributed to warding off evil spirits.
This platter is made from mahogany, which has beautiful rays of red and gold, and measures 10.5 inches roughly by 1.5 deep.
